WELCOME

It is my privilege to extend a very warm welcome to all visitors to the South Devon Railway Association Limited Web Site. I hope you will enjoy visiting the site, and if you are not already a member, we look forward to receiving your application form in due course.

The SDRA is a body of around 2500 members, with some 500 of those actively assisting with the running of the South Devon Railway in the day to day activities.

We represent an extremely responsible team of unpaid volunteers, working in a professional manner, without whom the South Devon Railway would not be financially viable. In all we produce a very effective team effort.

We publish a quarterly magazine, Bulliver, which is distributed to all members. This publication, together with the details contained within the pages of this Web Site, will help you to keep abreast of all the happenings associated with the operation of the South Devon Railway.

Background:
The South Devon Railway Association provide financial and other support to the South Devon Railway Trust, a charity, who operate the Standard Gauge Railway between Buckfastleigh and Totnes in South Devon, England beside the fast flowing river Dart.
The line was built by the South Devon Railway and first opened on 1st May 1872.
It was taken over by the Great Western Railway in 1876.
The line closed to all traffic on 7th September 1962 and was re-opened as a preserved steam line on 5th April 1969 making 2009 our 40th anniversary year.
The South Devon Railway Trust took over the running of the line on 1st January 1991.
We have a number of steam locomotives and privately owned diesels, together with some historic rolling stock.
