GWR Special Saloon 9004 moves to Buckfastleigh
The owners of Special Saloon 9004 are due to relocate their vehicle to the South Devon Railway. 9004 was built in 1930 as a special saloon for special charter traffic or inspection train use. It is equipped with a kitchen, galley, fridges, wine coolers, store room, guard’s brake and two seating areas. One seating area is equipped with first class seating for fourteen and the other is an observation saloon with seating for 7 plus a useful area that can be used for setting out tables for buffets. It also has the advantage of being corridor connected at both ends.
9004 joins sibling 9005. which came to the South Devon Railway in 2005 and is used on the dining train complementing the two Super Saloons ‘King George’ and ‘Duchess of York’.

9004, unlike 9005, has been modified to have “Pullman” draw gear so can be used easilly as an add on to buck eyed stock like it was on the main line in 2011 – see photograph below taken on 17th August 2011 by the SDRA Chairman Ted Parrott when the “Fellsman” Special passed through Carlise..
