Dates: 3rd — 6th April 2015
There’ll be steam and diesel trains all day, a regular passenger train service, occasional goods trains, heritage commercial vehicles & vintage cars, and an Easter egg hunt and moving train grotto, plus much more on site at the scenic and multiple award–winning South Devon Railway (SDR) this Easter from Friday 3rd – Monday 6th April 2015.
Visitors can enjoy an amazing steam train journey along the banks of the River Dart, through some of Devon’s most beautiful and hidden countryside. It’ll literally take you on a trip back in time!
And this Easter, the South Devon Railway will be using the theme of ‘delivering the goods’
So, as well as an enhanced passenger train service, the scenic seven–mile long line will also be running a series of goods trains, showing the way that the railways were once the prime movers of freight traffic all around the country, and every country branch line, when most stations had a goods shed and sidings where goods traffic was received and despatched.
To complement the trains, there will be a display of historic commercial vehicles, from small delivery vans and buses to lorries of the kind that would have been seen at railways and on the roads in times gone by. There will be vintage cars and motor bikes on display as well.
The SDR’s red London Routemaster ’bus RM1872 will also be running around Buckfastleigh, and will be joined by two other historic Western National buses too; with a possible rail replacement service to Staverton.
And for younger visitors, there’ll be an on–board Easter Grotto on certain trains on Easter Sunday & Monday where children can meet the SDR’s very own Easter Bunny. The Grotto will run on the 11.30, 13.30, and 15.15 departures from Buckfastleigh at the far end of the train towards Ashburton.
And there's also an Easter Egg Hunt for children too which will cover the length of the entire seven-mile line, but that starts & finishes at Buckfastleigh station! At idyllic Staverton station, the mid point of the railway, the platform buffet coach will be open serving hot drinks, cakes and snacks too, and a children's book shop will operate at Totnes.
At Buckfastleigh, where there is plenty of free parking, there’s also a museum, award–winning gardens, a fascinating engineering workshop where you’ll see steam locos under repair, a shop and Refreshment Rooms and more.
You can also buy super value joint tickets to visit Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies and the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm. Adults and children alike will love it, whatever the weather!
And, from Monday 30th March, visitors will be able to buy normal travel tickets in advance on–line.
