The Winter Steam Gala is in full swing, now that half term week is upon us. The South Devon Railway has five steam engines available: 3205, 1369 and 6412 from the home fleet, plus 5542, and Beattie Well Tank 30587. The latter belongs to the National Railway Museum and is based at the Bodmin & Wenford Railway.
The timetable is very varied, so check the website to see what is actually running on each day if you are planning to visit.
Monday to Thursday is generally based on the blue (two train) service, but without the first and last trains at 10.00 and 16.30 from Buckfastleigh.

Each of the locomotives involved is pictured, and we are particularly grateful to Bernard Mills for those of the Beattie and 3205, taken on Sunday at Dartington. The weather was bitterly cold and fine, making for superb steam effects. Otherwise, 6412 is seen waiting its turn with auto coach W233; 5542 (working Wednesday 14th with two autos) takes water, and 1369 arrives at Buckfastleigh. Dave Knowling was in charge of the Beattie on Monday. The museum has been busy with free children’s activities, which have again proved popular.

Work on the new sidings has continued, with the PW gang seen clearing up using the Class 04 diesel shunter. Incidentally, our station at Totnes has now reverted to being Totnes Riverside. Thanks to Allan Lovegrove for the photo.
Incidentally, if you are visiting, Hood Bridge is now open to road traffic again.
Best wishes
