Ashburton Junction Signal Box
Progress
Progress on the 'new' signalbox at Totnes (Littlehempston) continues apace. The box, which is now called Ashburton Junction, was originally at Cradley Heath. The wooden superstructure was moved to Buckfastleigh by low loader earlier this year and taken apart and moved to Totnes by rail in 'flatpack' form. The volunteers at Totnes have now rebuilt it and over the last three weeks have added the roof. The slates will be put on over the next few weekends.
A new brick base was built by contractors and they have just completed building a new chimney. Work will go on now to complete the outside structure so that the S&T technicians can make a start on installing the frame and relocking it to control the layout at Totnes.
Consideration is being given to making an early start on instituting electric token working to replace the present system of Staff & Ticket that is used between Staverton (Bishops Bridge) and Totnes but in the meantime the first function the new box will take on will be to replace the existing ground frame.
