The Easter Gala this year will be a celebration of the Cambrian lines in Wales with an intensive service, goods trains, auto trains, fairground rides, vintage vehicles and fun for all. Special guest locomotive, GWR Dukedog No 9017 Earl of Berkeley from the Bluebell Railway.
The GWR "Earl" class 4-4-0 locomotives were nicknamed "Dukedog" because they were built by combining the frames of the "Bulldog" locomotives with the boilers from the "Duke" class. The class was built between 1936 and 1939.
The "Dukedog" class, along with the later 2251 class (of which 3205 is the sole survivor) were the only GWR locomotives light enough to work trains over the wooden Barmouth Bridge on the Cambrian line; hence, with an example of each class, the South Devon Railway is holding a "Cambrian Easter Gala".
With ample car parking at Buckfastleigh on the A38 Devon Expressway, the South Devon Railway is just 25 minutes from Plymouth, Exeter and Torbay.
An extensive museum, including Brunel's only surviving "broad gauge" engine "Tiny",
- Expressway model and gift shop,
- Riverside walks, a children's play area,
- Newly refurbished "Refreshment Rooms"
- Picnic area and wooded parkland.
