During 2024 4496 was withdrawn from traffic so the corridor ends could be rebuilt including new end sheets, crash columns and their mounting plate on the chassis.
The opportunity was also taken to fully rewire the carriage including passive provision for Central Door Locking.
The wiring scheme uses different colours for each circuit to assist in fault finding in the future hence the multicolours visible in the pictures above.
Due to the additional services provided by the South Devon Railway such as their Murder Mystery evenings the rewire included the ability to dim the central “Fishbowl” luminaires and the RCH based public address system was revised to our latest version which includes local audio injection so events local to the carriage can be supported.
The RCH PA was also rewired so it no longer uses wires patched into the former BR saloon lighting switch and so has its own dedicated cabling spliced into the main RCH cables which will make maintenance and fault finding easier.
