The South Devon Railway is proud to announce that it can supply sand for Railway locomotives to BR600 and for multiple units to GM/RT 2461.

Beating the ”Wrong kind of leaves”. After extensive research by SDR Workshop Manager Rob Le Chevalier, the SDR is now able to offer other heritage steam railways a source of special, free-running locomotive sand at reasonable cost which conforms to both BR600 (Specification for Sand for Locomotive use Feb 1991) and GM/RT 2461 for Multiple Units with distributed sanding devices.

Sourcing non cloying sand of uniform size and quality which is free from impurities, such as salt and clay, has long been a problem for heritage railways during the leaf drop season when sanders are often needed. The sand has been sourced under ISO 9001 registration number 3654 and is packed and supplied by Specialist Aggregates of Stafford.

Supplied in 12½kg bags, the sand is available from stock at Buckfastleigh, but discounts will be offered on bulk quantities and a pallet delivery service is also available. Further info from Rob Le Chevalier on (01364) 643461 or
