Accordingly, the South Devon Railway Plc, was formed, and a £2m share issue in the company launched as the principle method of raising the £1.13m purchase price. On the 27th March 2002 the following statement was made by the South Devon Railway General Manager Mr Richard Elliott.
27th March 2002 Railway Changes Hands! In a deal costing over a million pounds one of South Devon’s prime tourist attractions, the South Devon Railway, has changed ownership. The new owners, the South Devon Railway Trust, a Charitable Trust, run mainly by volunteers, have operated the line for the last ten years as tenants of the previous operators Dart Valley Railway Plc. The funds have been raised by a share issue through a new Public Company set up by members of the Trust. The Trust now intends to improve and develop the line by providing better facilities for visitors, better storage facilities for the line’s historic stock, as well as the possibility of a new museum building. The share issue remains open to the public as more money will be needed to fund these developments. It is also intended to seek help from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
