SOUTH DEVON RAILWAY
wins contract for Buckfastleigh Works

Job Complete 22 December 2000

The Buckfastleigh Works of the South Devon Railway has been awarded the contract to construct a new pair of  pannier tanks for 0-6-0 No 4612 (earlier report incorrectly identified the engine as 4614) which is under repair at Swindon Workshops Ltd, Lydney in the Forest of Dean.

The SDR has not undertaken many contract jobs as it has previously always been necessary to concentrate on the  lines' own locomotives. However, a lull in internal activities has given a window of opportunity to undertake this  outside work. Considerable experience has been gained in the kind of fabrication work being undertaken where  Buckfastleigh has previously produced a new set of tanks of similar design for home grown pannier tank 5786, a  new set of side tanks for 2-6-2 5526 and new bunkers for 1369, 5526 & 5786 as well as the usual plethora of smaller  fabrication jobs.

Given time in the work schedules on the home fleet the SDR will always be willing to look at outside work. Phone  01364 - 643461 and ask for Rob!
